In the present report the review of the boron production market in the CIS (ore mining, manufacture volumes and the basic manufacturers of boric acid and other boric production, export-import transactions, the price review and structure of consumption) is submitted. The data in the report include last 12 years as far as manufacture volumes are concerned (1994-2005), foreign trade operations are analyzed for the period of 1998 up to 2005. Besides the brief characteristic of the world boron market is presented.

At present Russia is the only CIS country where development of boric deposits is carried out, and volume of boron containing ore extraction of the Russian Federation is the third one after Turkey and the USA. Up to 1998 Kazakhstan carried out exploitation of Indesky deposit at Inder Lake using original technology of underwater extraction of eluvial ores without drainage and water-outflow.

Global borate consumption has exceeded 1,5 million t. In 2004 only in the USA the market capacity of boron-containing products made up 385 thousand t (on conversion to B2O3). In Russia the volume of boric production consumption in comparison to the United States is lower by a factor of 10. Practically all the ore extracted in Russia is used for boric acid production and consumption of the acid now does not exceed 40 thousand t.

The exclusive manufacturer of boron-containing production in the CIS is GHT "Bor" that exploits the only one in Russia (and one of three in the world) datolite deposit. The enterprise is unique from the point of view of production technology - boron is not produced of the datolite ores anywhere in the world. "Bor" - the enterprise with the closed production loop including the open cut extraction, ore-dressing and further processing and also boron products manufactureò (it manufactures about 20 types of boron-containing production).

For the three latest years the combine works at full capacity putting out about 110 thousand t of boric acid per year. Now the combined considers variants of start up of a laid up boric acid work shop. Consequently in 2007-2008 growth of manufacture volume up to 120-125 thousand ò is possible.

By virtue of its geographical location (Primorski Krai) the Joint-Stock Company "Bor" is an export oriented enterprise, and its basic consumers are the countries of Asian - Pacific region (China, Japan, Republic Korea). Only 15-25% of production are delivered to the home market.

Several years ago the enterprises located in the European part of Russia, consumed boric acid manufactured by the Joint Stock Company "Yudzno-Uralsky Kryolytovy Zavod". Not having its own raw material, YUUKZ is completely dependent on borate ores deliveries from Kazakhstan, and recently it had notably reduced the boric acid production volume, and in 2005 it stopped manufacture of the given kind of production. In this connection in 2002-2005 import of the boric acid has been considerably growing. So in 2005 the share of the foreign companies in the Russian market has reached 38 % whereas in 1999 this parameter made up only 0,2 %. It is necessary to note, that volumes of the boric acid deliveries are adjusted not only by internal consumption, but also by the price for the given production. Growth of the world prices in 2003 was reflected in import, H3BO3 deliveries were halved in comparison with the previous year. The basic foreign supplier of the boric acid is the Borax Company
